Diet Success - Learn How To Avoid Diet Pitfalls

You really do try to watch your diet. You skip the sweet treats, use portion control, and exercise more. But losing weight just seems impossible.

Well, you’re not alone. This is a very common problem. Many dieters try, over and over again, to lose weight, but eventually become so discouraged that they simply give up. Don’t let this happen to you. By understanding some of the common causes of diet failures, you can successfully lose weight, and keep it off.

1) While you might expect help from family or friends, they are not always supportive. Some people seem to be able to eat whatever they want without gaining weight. They bring tempting junk food into your home or workplace. They don’t appreciate the difficulty of your task. Ask them to help by not eating the junk or snack food when you are around.

Your surroundings sabotage your efforts. You are exposed to fast food and coffee shops, huge restaurant meals, snack machines filled with junk food, and advertisements everywhere. You must learn to control your environment as much as possible. Stay away from places where you are tempted. Take a look at the nutrition labels before you eat, so that you will know the actual food portion sizes. Packages can be misleading. Bring a healthy snack with you (a piece of fruit or handful of nuts). And try using one of the new portion plates for your meals.

2) Diets don’t take into account your own body, metabolism, habits and lifestyle. They offer a single approach, with no room for individual variations. One way to overcome this is develop a more personalized approach. A doctor or nutritionist can help. It is easy to find one near by, if you check the phone book or library, or search the internet. A dietician can set up a personal diet plan for you, and also become your diet coach and mentor, providing feedback and encouragement.

3) There are hidden calories in many everyday foods. Even foods you think are healthy; for example, fruit juices and many “low-fat” products still have a lot of calories. Most people don’t realize that a frappuccino coffee might have up to 600 calories! Watch out for hidden sources of calories that can undermine your diet efforts.

4) You must persevere, otherwise you are sure to fail. Making good progress in your dieting efforts requires minimizing the number of times you ‘cheat’ and being persistent. Don’t look for quick weight loss. It is much healthier to lose weight gradually. And it takes time. Don’t give up too soon.

5) Too many people lose weight and then gain it all back again when they return to their former eating habits. Don’t let that happen to you. Being successful at losing weight and keeping it off requires that you change your lifestyle and attitude. You will have to adjust your attitudes on food and eating. Find a diet and meal plan you can be comfortable with. A portion control plate can not only help you loose weight, but can be used to help keep the weight off.

It is easier to succeed if you find the right diet plan, since everyone’s needs are different. According to nutritionists and dieticians, there are several important factors involved in losing and maintaining your weight. If you choose the right foods, limit calories using food portion control, increase your exercise and activity level, and don’t give up, you CAN be successful and achieve a healthy weight for life.
